This is the second fresco Diego Rivera painted in the City by the Bay.
Despite Rivera’s controversial reputation as an outspoken proponent of Communism and worker’s rights (which made him persona non grata in both Mexico and the U.S.), the San Francisco Art Institute commissioned him to create a fresco that showcased the labor and artistry of artists and workers alike, across a variety of fields.
Rivera completed the fresco in a month and you can still see it today, in its original location at the Institute’s Diego Rivera Gallery.
