When Los Angelenos want to escape the heat in summer or catch some powder in winter, they head up to Big Bear, a beautiful, snow-fed lake surrounded by mountains and forests of pine—ripe for boating, parasailing, fishing, hiking, biking, et. al., in summer; and skiing, snowboarding, tubing, et. al., in winter.
Big Bear’s ski slopes are nowhere as splendid as ones in Northern California, but they are a decent alternative and only a 2 hour drive from Palm Springs and LA
Snow tires or chains are required when driving here in winter
