A man relaxing in a stone bath, gazing out at the Pacific Ocean, at Esalen Hot SpringsSit back and unwind in a natural hot spring overlooking Big Sur’s gorgeous coastline.

For more than 10,000 years, mankind has enjoyed the hot springs here, since the days of the Esselen Indians who revered the springs for their healing powers.

The hot springs flow at a rate of 80 gallons (303 L) per minute and at a temperature of 119° F (48° C). They are now under the care of the Esalen Institute, a spiritual learning center.

You can access the springs by day with a massage appointment; or, better yet, at 1 o’clock in the morning when you can err on the wild side of Esalen’s clothing optional policy. The best time to visit is April-Sept, when the weather is consistently lovely.

Late night access (1am-3am) $30 per person, for up to 4 people; advanced online reservation required

Massage session $165 for 75 minutes; you will be able to soak in the springs an hour before and after your massage
