Ferry across San Diego’s illustrious bay to the Coronado Peninsula, where you can bike along the coast for 3 miles (5 km) to the white sand beaches of the Hotel del Coronado, a gorgeous, Queen-Anne style resort built in the 1880s.
Enjoy a 90-minute, guided tour of this historic hotel before riding south for 5.5 miles (8.8 km) to Silver Strand State Beach, via The Strand, a scenic road flanked by the ocean on one side and the bay on the other.
How to Go!
- Take a 15-minute ferry ride from San Diego to Coronado via Flagship Ferry, which departs from Broadway Pier (990 N Harbor Dr, San Diego) hourly from 9am-9pm. The ferry is $9.50 roundtrip. You can park at USS Midway for $10; or take the train to Santa Fe Depot and walk 2 blocks to the ferry.
- At the Coronado Ferry Landing, you can rent a bike for $8+/hour or $29+/day at one of the bike rental places on-site. Then take either the scenic route, along the coast, or the short route, through residential neighborhoods, to the Hotel del Coronado. View a map of Coronado’s bike paths.
- At the Hotel (1500 Orange Ave, Coronado; (619) 435-6611), join a 1.5 hour, guided walking tour for $20. The tour is held on Mon, Wed & Fri, 10:30am and Sat-Sun, 2pm; and is reservable online.
- After your tour, bike onwards along The Strand to Silver Strand State Beach (5000 CA Route 75, Coronado). Day use parking at the beach is $8-$10 and available 7am-7pm (closes 8pm, Mar-May; 9pm, June-Aug). RV camping is also available at the beach for $50-$65, reservable online 7 months in advance.
